Coffee in Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs coffee roasters cluster in the old neighborhoods under Pikes Peak. High Rise has roasted in Old Colorado City since 1995, and Switchback started there in a garage in 2010. After Denver, no Colorado town has more roasters filed under it on the Roast Local directory. Fourteener Coffee Club ships a bag from a different independent Colorado roaster in every box, and it starts every member at Box 1, Pikes Peak.

Roasters in and near Colorado Springs

  • Loyal Coffee, downtown and Ivywild. The first cafe opened in October 2017 on South Nevada Avenue with its own roasting program from day one. Roasting has since moved to Ivywild, south of downtown, and a second cafe serves Northgate.
  • Switchback Coffee Roasters, Hillside and Shooks Run. The roastery and brew bar is at 909 East Moreno Avenue, and the cafe on North Institute Street is open daily. Its motto is excellent coffee for everyone, and it pours pay what you can drip coffee.
  • High Rise Coffee Roasters, Old Colorado City. It has roasted in the district's shopping streets since 1995.
  • Colorado Coffee Merchants. It began in April 2004 with a small 8 lb fluid-bed air roaster and three bags of green coffee.

Colorado Springs' coffee story

Old Colorado City is where much of the city's roasting took root. High Rise Coffee Roasters has roasted in the shopping district there since 1995. Switchback moved out of its founders' garage into warehouse space in Old Colorado City in October 2011, then into a storefront in July 2012.

Colorado Coffee Merchants started small in April 2004: one 8 lb fluid-bed air roaster and three bags of green coffee.

The city's weekly paper kept score. Switchback won bronze, then silver, then gold from the Colorado Springs Independent over its first three years, the gold arriving by 2013.

Loyal came out of the cafes themselves. Six Colorado Springs baristas started meeting in 2015 as a kind of think tank about their careers and the coffee trade, and they chose to build here instead of moving to a bigger coffee city. The six still split the company by strength, from Bevan Cammell as head roaster to Seth Fuller on education.

The US Census Bureau's July 2025 estimate counts 494,743 people in Colorado Springs. Loyal's founders describe staying as watering the grass at their feet, and that is what buying from a roaster here does: the money pays roasters and baristas in Ivywild and Old Colorado City.
