Their story

Founder Eric moved to Colorado Springs in 1985 and joined the city fire department in 1987. He also led the Colorado Springs Professional Firefighters union as its president. Before coffee he ran other small businesses, first a mobile DJ service and then a mobile oil change company. Roasting at home was a hobby all along. After finding space for a small commercial roaster, he opened the roastery to the public on April 1, 2004, starting with an 8 pound fluid bed air roaster and three bags of beans.

It began as evening roasting for family and friends. Walk-in customers soon asked to buy beans, and the first employee was hired in June 2004. Eric has since retired from the fire department and runs the roastery with three full-time employees. Every green coffee is graded, sample roasted and cupped before the company agrees to buy it.

Roast levels run French and Italian. House blends include Ute Pass, 1918, Roswell Park, Old Stage Road, Cabin, Idle Truck, Extra Truck, All Hands, Last Alarm and Working Fire. Single origins on the list when we checked: Colombian Supremo, Mexican and Sumatra. An espresso is on the list. Decaf: French, Italian, Mexican, Cabin and Espresso decafs.
