Durango coffee has a long local record. Durango Coffee Company began wholesaling roasted beans on May 1, 1984, and Desert Sun Coffee Roasters won a Specialty Coffee Association award in 2020. Pagosa Springs has roasters of its own, and Telluride, Mancos, Alamosa and Del Norte each have one on the Roast Local directory. Durango Coffee Company runs its shop at 730 Main Avenue and roasts at the Durango Tech Center. Its direct trade lots include coffees from Las Lajas, a family farm near Poas Volcano in Costa Rica known for honey and natural processing, and it roasts light, medium and dark (checked 2026-09-27). Customers in the Durango area can pick up orders free.

Southwest Colorado's coffee story
The Durango roasting story starts with a chef. Carl Rand was working as a seasonal chef in the Durango area in 1982 when he came up with the idea of roasting coffee and selling it to local restaurants. On May 1, 1984, he started wholesaling roasted beans from his home in Hermosa. His first customer was Maria's Bookshop.
Three years later he moved into town and roasted in the back of the Upper Crust Bakery, where he was also the pastry chef, before buying the building at 730 Main Avenue for a full coffee shop and kitchen store. In 1990 he split the company into retail and wholesale sides and moved the roasting to the Durango Tech Center. The company marked 40 years in business in May 2024, and the Durango Herald covered the anniversary. It still sells wholesale across the Four Corners.
Desert Sun Coffee Roasters, a member-owner of the Cooperative Coffees group, won the Specialty Coffee Association's 2020 Sustainability Award in the Business Model category.
Rand says paying farmers sustainable prices is what keeps the quality high, and the same logic runs the other way: roasters in Durango and Pagosa Springs stay open when people here buy their coffee.
