Telluride Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Colorado: an independent roaster based in Telluride. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Founder Mick Hill started out in 1992 with a Main Street coffee house in Telluride called the Steaming Bean, and the business later grew into sourcing, wholesale and retail roasting. Coffee is hand roasted on a 2016 Probat P25 in batches of about 40 pounds, using a slow profile at close to 9,000 feet. Hill has spent about 35 years in the green coffee trade, and the company counts more than 75 years of combined experience in buying, importing, roasting and tasting.
Steaming Bean branded coffee still goes to coffeehouses, hotels and supermarkets, alongside wholesale supplies and a growing online store. Its French roast is built from dense, high grown South American beans chosen because they hold up to a very dark roast, and a decaf version is sold too.

Roast levels run French roast and dark. House blends include Avalanche Blend, Black Canyon, Cimarron Blend, Breakfast Brew, Mountain Harvest, Black Magic, Mesa Verde and Stormcloud (half caff). Single origins on the list when we checked: Bali Kintamani, Peru Yuraq Yaku, Burundi Munkaze, Ethiopia Kolla Bolcha, Aged Sumatra, Papua New Guinea and Kenya AB+/AA. Why buying from Telluride Coffee Roasters matters here
The online coffees were once sold as Steaming Bean and are now sold only under the Telluride name. Because the town is remote, the roaster notes that shipping takes one to five days, which gives the beans time to finish degassing before they arrive.
Every bag bought from a Telluride roaster pays roasting and cafe wages in Colorado, and the coffee reaches you days after roasting instead of months. That is the reason the club exists. Why local roasters matter.
