  • Durango Coffee Company, 730 Main Avenue. The shop and kitchen store are downtown, and the roasting happens at the Durango Tech Center. It buys direct trade lots from Las Lajas, a family farm in Costa Rica known for honey and natural processing.
  • Desert Sun Coffee Roasters, Sawyer Drive. A member owner of Cooperative Coffees, it roasts only USDA organic coffee. Its blends carry Four Corners names, and the Mesa Verde Blend was first roasted just for Mesa Verde National Park.

Durango's coffee story

It starts with a chef. Carl Rand was cooking seasonally around Durango in 1982 when he decided to roast coffee and sell it to local restaurants. On May 1, 1984, he began wholesaling from his home in Hermosa, and his first account was Maria's Bookshop. Three years later he was roasting in the back of the Upper Crust Bakery, where he was also the pastry chef, before he bought 730 Main Avenue.

In 1990 Rand split the business into retail and wholesale and moved roasting to the Durango Tech Center. He sold the shop in 2004, and the company marked 40 years in May 2024.

Desert Sun works through its co-op, which lets it deal with farmers directly. Through that co-op it shared in the Specialty Coffee Association's 2020 Sustainability Award in the business model category.

Easy is the newest owner story. Brice and Matt spent close to six years at 81301 Coffee House as general manager and roaster, then bought it in July 2022. The coffee house is named for the town's zip code.

How we chose these roasters

Every roaster here roasts in Colorado and was operating when we read its own site, on the date its card shows (the list itself was last checked 2026-09-27). Facts come from each roaster's own pages, written in our words; we take nothing from reviews and show no ratings. No roaster pays to be listed, and a listing does not mean the roaster is part of the club. Run a roaster here and something is off? Email coffee@fourteenercoffeeclub.com and we correct or remove the page.
