San Juan Mountain Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Colorado: an independent roaster based in Del Norte. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Ben, Liz and Isaac Callard founded the family roastery so they could always drink freshly roasted coffee. Their first roaster came from a friend who was getting out of the business. The family roasts in batches of four to five pounds near Del Norte in the San Luis Valley, and says it keeps learning at roasting education events. Ben built the River Blend by roasting three coffees to different temperatures and then blending them. The Canyon Blend, its signature dark roast, also roasts each bean separately and slowly.
Coffee club orders ship by priority mail, so bags reach homes two or three days after roasting.
What they roast
Roast levels run Light (Breakfast Blend), Medium (River Blend), Medium dark (Chiapas) and Dark (Canyon Blend). House blends include River Blend, Mountain Blend, Canyon Blend, Breakfast Blend, Winter Blend and Half-Caf Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Batucada, Brazil, Chiapas, Mexico and Sumatra. Decaf: Swiss Water Process Decaf. Schools, clubs and nonprofits can buy at wholesale cost under their own label and resell the coffee to raise money, with no minimum order. Custom blends and fundraising partnerships are how the family backs local businesses and youth programs. Grocers, restaurants and shops can order custom-labeled coffee, and an office program sends a different coffee each month.
