The Buena Vista Roastery is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Colorado: an independent roaster based in Buena Vista, founded in 1994. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Bill and Cheryl Mehaffey started roasting in Buena Vista in 1994 under the name Bongo Billy's Coffees, and they also brought a cafe to town. Joel and Laurie bought Bongo Billy's in 2007 and launched the Buena Vista Roastery label to spread the town's name. Scott took over the business in 2022. Roasting at about 8,000 feet means longer roast times because of the thinner air. The company says the slower roast lets sugars caramelize and gives a smoother cup.
All of its coffee is certified organic. It roasts on demand in small batches, so most orders leave the day after they are placed.
What they roast
House blends include Buena Vista Blend, Black Canyon Blend, Bongo Billy's Blend, River Blend and Mount Princeton Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Nicaragua, Colombia, Honduras, Guatemala, Uganda, Mexico, Sumatra, Peru and Ethiopia. Espresso: High Country Espresso. Decaf: Decaf Honduras, Decaf Mexico. The roastery sits in the Arkansas River Valley, which it notes has more 14,000 foot peaks nearby than anywhere else in the lower 48 states. Blend names such as Mount Princeton and River nod to the valley around it.
