Their story
The business was the original Bongo Billy's Cafe before it became Brown Dog, and it has served locals and travelers in Buena Vista and Salida since 1995. Roasting takes place inside the Buena Vista cafe. Beans sell by the pound there and online, and a coffee club ships a fresh bag each month. Brown Dog sample roasts every green coffee before buying it, and much of the lineup is organic or fair trade.
Its roastmaster, Clinton Bellinger, built the Collegiate Peaks Sunrise blend. The house Brown Dog Blend is a slightly smoky dark roast that the company calls a local favorite.

Roast levels run Light, Medium, Dark and Italian. House blends include Brown Dog Blend, Arkansas River Blend, Monarch Mountain Blend, Collegiate Peaks Sunrise, Prospectors Blend, Bird Dog Blend, Boater's Blend, Hair of the Dog Blend and Mocha Java. Single origins on the list when we checked: El Salvador Las Ranas, Guatemala Coban Finca Santa Paula, Costa Rican West Valley Monte Crisol, Papua New Guinea Siane Chimbu, Ethiopian Yirgacheffe, Colombian Supremo, Sumatra, Mexican Chiapas, Nicaraguan, Honduran, Brazil Santos and Java. Espresso: Espresso Blend. Decaf: Decaf versions of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe and Boater's Blend. Offerings change with the seasons, so this is what their own pages listed on 2026-09-28.

Why buying from Brown Dog Coffee Company matters here
The company runs the Java Stop at Monarch Mountain, a coffee and pastry counter in the Fireplace Room on the top floor of the ski area's main lodge. Prospector's Blend was created to mark the 2015 season of the TV show Prospectors, which was filmed in Chaffee County. Several coffees carry local names, including the Arkansas River Blend, a recent bean of the month, and a Monarch Mountain breakfast blend.
