The Blue Mug Coffee & Roastery is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Colorado: an independent roaster based in Greeley, founded in 2011. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Art and Karla Long, both Colorado natives, first ran a small coffee shop in southern Colorado before selling it and moving back north to Greeley. The first Blue Mug opened on Labor Day 2011 in a 35th Avenue space that a Starbucks had just left. Small batch roasting later moved to the west Greeley roastery. The business has grown to three Greeley shops, and pastries are baked each morning at the Westlake Village location and sent warm to the others.
Art and Karla met and married in Boulder and bought their first coffee shop in southern Colorado in early 2000, which is where they learned the trade. Art jokes on the site that the name has no deep backstory; the family picked it from hundreds of ideas because blue simply sounded right, and a friend drew the logo.

The owners say the roastery and the university-area shop both have a meeting room that community groups can reserve at no charge. The 59th Avenue roastery, in the shopping center with Cable's End, has a drive thru, and the downtown shop sits across from Kepner Hall at UNC. Local artists can apply to hang their work in the shops through a form on the website.
