Refuge Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Colorado: an independent roaster based in Lake City. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Andy and Joy first worked together guiding wilderness trips for a Lake City summer camp. They married in 2011 and settled in town. They took the first steps toward a coffee business in 2018, starting with roasting at about 8,500 feet, with a cafe as a later goal. Andy grew up near Wichita, Kansas, and Joy in the Chicago suburbs. Both loved the outdoors, and they are now raising two sons in Lake City.
Before roasting, Joy spent a couple of years managing a small coffee shop, and the couple had talked about owning a cafe and roasting company since they met. The online menu lists a Huehuetenango Guatemala, an Ethiopia, an Indonesia, a Central American decaf and an espresso built from South American, Central American and African beans.

Why buying from Refuge Roasters matters here
Orders mail Monday through Friday only, because UPS does not serve Lake City on weekends. Andy also runs Refuge Builders, a Lake City general contracting business, and cites about 25 years of construction and maintenance management in the valley.
Every bag bought from a Lake City roaster pays roasting and cafe wages in Colorado, and the coffee reaches you days after roasting instead of months. That is the reason the club exists. Why local roasters matter.
