Garden Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Colorado: an independent roaster based in Littleton, founded in 2017. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
John and Delmy Mattos started the company in 2017. Delmy, who moved to the United States from Honduras in 2000, wanted to help small growers in her home country. Beans are bought directly from about a dozen family farms in Honduras, which the couple visits each year, and roasted to order in Littleton. A Honduran processor and exporter makes the direct buying practical, and the company says it pays its growers more than the commodity market rate.
Featured farms such as Finca Valentina, Finca Los Pinos, Finca Las Lichas and Finca Buena Vista carry Fair Trade, Rainforest Alliance, USDA Organic or UTZ certification, the company reports. Growers in its network clear only enough mountain forest to let filtered sunlight reach the coffee, so most of the canopy stays in place as shade. New Honduran farms rotate into the lineup each season as the couple meets more growers, although a few coffees from other countries are also sold.
