Their story

The roaster works at 7,083 feet in Salida and aims to buy fair trade, organic beans whenever they are available. Owner Bryan Joslin first knew the Arkansas Valley from work as a river guide based in Coaldale, has lived in Salida since 1999, and opened a cafe called Sacred Ground Coffee in 2003. A fire gutted the building housing his shop in February 2005. During the rebuild he added the roasting he had long planned, and the phoenix name reflects that fresh start.

Joslin writes that his first Diedrich roaster tipped over on the way to Salida, and the maker sent a better demo unit to replace it. Half Brazilian, Joslin traces his first taste of coffee to a family reunion at his uncle's home in Brazil when he was about seven. More than 20 wholesale accounts carry the coffee, among them cafes, hotels, restaurants, bike shops and hot springs resorts.

House blends include Cruise Control Blend and Eclipse Blend.
