Lost Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Colorado: an independent roaster based in Highlands Ranch, founded in 2010. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Lost Coffee got its start in 2010 as a food truck and had a permanent shop open within roughly a year. Owner Scott Gaerte writes that he has spent about 15 years in coffee, after earlier jobs in outdoor retail and at a winery. The Springer Drive cafe in Highlands Ranch doubles as the main roasting site. Besides its own shops, the company sells beans to local businesses, Whole Foods and neighborhood grocers.
Together with its importers, Lost Coffee pays premiums meant to reach farmers as well as workers at sorting tables and washing stations, and it often buys from women-owned farms. Its green coffee buyer, a licensed Q Grader named Kevin, visits producers in person. One such trip led to a washed lot from Aurelio Villatoro's farm in Huehuetenango, Guatemala.
What they roast
House blends include Flat Black Espresso Blend and Before Dawn Dark Roast. Single origins on the list when we checked: Djimma, Ethiopia, SJ Heirloom, Colombia, Tirra Tarrazu, Costa Rica and Ibisi Mountain, Rwanda. Espresso: Flat Black Espresso Blend. Local nonprofits benefit from fundraisers the company runs to raise both money and awareness. The cafes host free public coffee tastings along with paid classes, such as an espresso basics workshop held at the Highlands Ranch shops.
