Their story
Tami Canaday founded Wagon Coffee in Denver in 2020 to give women in recovery from addiction jobs, encouragement and a second chance. Canaday describes herself as a recovery advocate and the loved one of an addict. Her husband Ryan has been sober for more than 13 years, and in 2018 the couple started a nonprofit called FREE for people in recovery and their families. Through that work she learned how hard recovery can be for women, and during the pandemic she decided to build a business that could help.
The name comes from the old saying that someone sober is on the wagon, and the company talks about being the wagon for the women it employs. Wagon roasts on an all-electric Bellwether roaster that cleans its exhaust as it roasts, which the company says cuts the carbon footprint of each roast by about 90 percent on average. It buys through trusted importers and personal friends, commits to paying producers above Fair Trade prices, and many of its coffees are organic and carry living income pricing.
The company is owned and run by women, and its goal is to have its coffee in every recovery facility in Colorado and then across the country. 5280 Magazine readers voted it first for Most Eco-Friendly Product in the Top of the Town awards.

Roast levels run white, light, medium and dark. House blends include Be The Wagon (Brazil, medium), Four Horsemen (Ethiopia and Brazil, dark), Recovery (Colombia, medium), Sober AF (Bali, medium), Resilience (Papua New Guinea, medium) and Clean and Sober (Ethiopia, light). Single origins on the list when we checked: First Light, East Java Mt. Ijen (light), Higher Power, 100% Kona (medium), Conscious Contact, Panama Geisha (medium), Carry On, Vietnam (medium), Reserve, Ethiopia Natural (medium) and Featured coffee of the month, Honduras Anaerobic (organic).
