Traction Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Colorado: an independent roaster based in Longmont, founded in 2018. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
The idea came up during a casual talk after a mountain bike ride. Soon after, the partners bought a USA-made San Franciscan roaster and started roasting. Founder Mike Murfitt came from BMX, found craft coffee while visiting shops on riding trips, and made it his career in 2015. A January 2025 Times-Call story reported that the company started in Lyons and later moved near downtown Longmont, and now ships to more than 30 countries.
Murfitt grew up in Longmont and first worked in the coffee trade running a coffee company alongside Oskar Blues founder Dale Katechis, the Times-Call reported. Limited lots rotate through the menu. One recent example is a Castillo grown by Juan David in Quindio, Colombia, and processed on the farm with real blueberry fruit.
What they roast
House blends include Fall Blend, Gateway Dark Roast Blend, Coffee & Donuts Blend, Stable Blend, Half Caff Blend and Dynamic Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Colombia Blueberry Banger, Brazil Cerrado Mineiro, Nicaragua Jaguarundi and Guatemala Huehuetenango. Decaf: Decaf Colombia Finca Cristalina. Why buying from Traction Coffee Roasters matters here
Speaking to the Times-Call in 2025, Murfitt summed up the aim of the business: "We are Longmont's coffee roaster." Its first roastery was a converted horse stable turned wood shop in Lyons, and the Stable blend is named for that start. Per the Times-Call, the beans are sold or poured around town at Juniper Goods, Pistachio Cafe Bakery and The Roost, and at Redstone Cyclery in Lyons.
Every bag bought from a Longmont roaster pays roasting and cafe wages in Colorado, and the coffee reaches you days after roasting instead of months. That is the reason the club exists. Why local roasters matter.
