Silver Canyon Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Colorado: an independent roaster based in Boulder, founded in 1985. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
The founder landed his first account in 1985 after about 15 years of interest in coffee. His family's second generation now runs the Boulder roastery. For its first nine years the company worked out of a log cabin workshop at about 8,000 feet in a mountain canyon, running its roaster off a generator and hauling green coffee sacks uphill. In 1994 Silver Canyon moved to a mesa just north of Boulder, surrounded by open space. It calls itself the first small batch specialty roaster in town.
Up to 30 origins are kept in stock, and the team roasts them by hand four days a week. Many of those coffees also go into its blends. Green coffee is held in a humidity controlled room so Colorado's dry air does not change it, and roasters adjust each day for temperature, humidity and air pressure.
What they roast
Roast levels run Light, Medium, Medium dark, Dark, French, Italian and Vienna. House blends include Blue Spruce, Deep Snow, Logger's Lift, Brownstone Breakfast Blend, Dark Canyon, Continental Blend, Colombian Blend and New Orleans. Single origins on the list when we checked: Costa Rica CoopeDota Tarrazu, Sumatra Takengon, Ethiopian Natural Process Yirgacheffe, Bali Blue Moon and Honduras. Espresso: Original Espresso.
