Kaladi Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Colorado: an independent roaster based in Englewood, founded in 2000. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Kaladi Coffee Roasters was founded in 2000 by Mark Overly and Andrew Melnick, and its first shop is on East Evans Avenue in Denver. The founders set out to bring back the quality they felt specialty coffee had lost as it drifted toward a chain store mindset. Kaladi roasts with hot air in a fluid bed, following the method developed by the engineer Michael Sivetz, and says air roasting gives a better flavor.
It buys from farmers it considers to use sustainable growing practices and respect workers' rights, and carries Fair Trade, Bird Friendly and women producer coffees. Its Awaken Community line features coffees grown only on women-owned farms. The company says coffee houses have always been community places, and it backs local causes at home and cooperative businesses in the regions where its coffee is grown.
The name comes from the legend of Kaldi, the goat herder credited in folklore with discovering coffee. Kaladi now roasts at its Roastery Cafe on South Broadway in Englewood, where customers can buy freshly roasted coffee by the pound.

Roast levels run light, medium and dark. House blends include Roaster's Choice (subscription).
