Dark Heart Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Colorado: an independent roaster based in Loveland, founded in 2015. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Dark Heart launched in March 2015, after about ten years of planning, as a handbuilt mobile coffee cart on the streets of downtown Loveland. The cart served around 100 events of all sizes in Loveland while the owners looked for a permanent home, and the brick and mortar Dark Heart Coffee Bar opened in June 2017 after some hard setbacks. The idea for the shop started as sketches on napkins, and the owners say they care about detail in everything from the room to the latte.
Dark Heart wants specialty coffee to feel approachable and likes teaching guests about what they are drinking. Every coffee it roasts comes from farms that meet or exceed organic standards. Some lots are not labeled organic because certification costs are too high for many small farmers, and Dark Heart chooses to buy from them anyway. It vets farms for both coffee quality and how they treat their workers.
The shop roasts single origins from places such as Ethiopia, Nicaragua, Brazil, Honduras and Mexico alongside a set of house blends from espresso to dark roast.
What they roast
Roast levels run medium, dark and espresso roast. House blends include Dawn 2 Dusk (medium, brewed in the cafe), Four19 (espresso roast, its darkest), Valient (dark roast), Darkest Days (dark roast) and Cold Brew blend (medium). Single origins on the list when we checked: Nicaragua San Rafael Natural, Ethiopia Shantawene Natural, Ethiopia Yukro Washed, Brazil Luiz Saldanha Natural, Honduras Reynaldo Caballero Washed and Mexico El Duraznal Washed. Four19, its take on a traditional Italian espresso, plus an espresso subscription. Decaf Colombia Inza, sugarcane decaf, roasted for drip and for espresso. The downtown Loveland coffee bar is a cafe and roastery open to the public, with in-store pickup for online orders.
