Conscious Coffees is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Colorado: an independent roaster based in Boulder, founded in 1996. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Conscious Coffees traces back to co-creators Mel and Mark, who started as baristas in Colorado's mountains in the early 1990s. By 1996 they owned a roaster and had a few wholesale accounts, and they refined their craft roasting through years of trial and error. Craig and his wife Laura have owned the company since 2017. Craig cups coffees with the quality team and packs most of the shipping orders himself.
All of its coffee is organic, and it buys directly from farmer cooperatives, which it says lets farmers keep a bigger share than Fair Trade minimums alone. Conscious Coffees is a Certified B Corporation. Some cooperative relationships are long: it has bought from Maya Vinic in Chiapas, Mexico since 2001, Rio Azul in Guatemala since 2006, Las Diosas in Nicaragua since 2010 and Muungano in Congo since 2014.
Wholesale partners get free equipment maintenance, barista training, cuppings with the quality team and help with menus and bar flow.
What they roast
Roast levels run light, medium, medium dark and dark. House blends include Basecamp House Blend (medium), Dark Star (dark Latin American blend), Mantecca Espresso Blend, Tafari (Ethiopian blend) and False Summit (half caff, medium dark). Single origins on the list when we checked: Ethiopia Guji Natural, Ethiopia Yirgacheffe, Ethiopia Sidama, natural and washed, Colombia Cauca (COSURCA), Guatemala Huehuetenango (Rio Azul), Mexico Chiapas (Maya Vinic), Nicaragua Esteli (Las Diosas), Congo South Kivu (Muungano), Honduras Marcala Honey (APROCOMSA) and Sumatra Gayo (Permata Gayo). Mantecca Espresso Blend of Indonesian and Ethiopian coffees. Downshift Decaf from Peru and Honduras cooperatives (Mountain Water Process lot code). Why buying from Conscious Coffees matters here
Its coffee is poured and sold around the Front Range, from Boulder and Denver cafes to Whole Foods in Superior and Fort Collins and Earle's Coffee in Loveland. Conscious supplies local community supported agriculture farms such as Red Wagon in Lafayette and Cure Organic Farm in Boulder. It partners with Denver's Dar Chocolate for a coffee and chocolate bundle. Staff deliver orders to local Boulder customers.
