Bona Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Colorado: an independent roaster based in Boulder, founded in 2017. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Andre Di Bonaventura founded the independent, family-owned roastery in Boulder in 2017. Bona is short for his surname, which the company translates as good fortune. Di Bonaventura grew up in Brazil, and City Lifestyle reported that some of the growers Bona buys from are people he has known since childhood. Coffees are chosen through blind tasting. The flagship espresso, Sant'Omero, takes its name from the Italian hometown of the founder's grandfather.
Bags and the shop's yellow cups carry woodcut prints by artist Gabriel Hardt showing Brazilian scenes, including a hummingbird the founder watched at his grandparents' farmhouse. Its relationship coffees come from farms the team has visited in person. One is grown by women in the Vargem Grande highlands of Minas Gerais, beside Caparao National Park.

House blends include Sant'Omero Espresso Blend, Curupira Breakfast Blend, Ventura Blend, Summer Paradise Cold Brew Blend and Bob-O-Dark. Single origins on the list when we checked: Yirgacheffe, Sumatra and Guji. Espresso: Sant'Omero Espresso Blend. Besides the Arapahoe Avenue roastery, which hosts cuppings and tours, Bona runs a coffee shop inside Avanti on Pearl Street.

Bona has worked with Boulder drink makers including Boulder Spirits and Sanitas Brewing. A coffee blonde stout called They Call Her Joe was brewed with Sanitas and 4 Noses. At the 2023 Bolder Boulder 10K the team poured its Summer Paradise cold brew for runners at the start line on Memorial Day. The Arapahoe Avenue roastery hosts cupping sessions and tours where guests see green coffee and compare roast profiles.
