The short answer
A coffee subscription is worth it if you finish a bag every two to four weeks, like trying new coffees and would rather not shop for beans. It is not worth it if you already love one roaster, drink less than a bag a month, or walk past a roaster's cafe every morning and enjoy buying there.
We sell a subscription, so read this with that in mind. We have tried to lay out the costs and the cases against it as plainly as the case for it.
What a subscription costs over a year
Here is ours in numbers. Every bag is 12 oz and $16.99, any roast. The first bag is free and you pay $7.99 shipping on that first box. After that, shipping is added per box and shown at checkout before you pay. You choose every 2 or 4 weeks and one or two bags a box.

The yearly figures are $16.99 times the number of bags, before the free first bag is taken off. The last column is our estimate: a 12 oz bag is about 340 grams, which makes about 17 mugs at the 20 grams a mug we use in our pour over recipe. Your mugs may be bigger.
That price is for specialty coffee roasted to order by an independent roaster, so the fair comparison is a bag from a local roaster's shelf, not a supermarket can. Check what your usual bag costs per ounce and compare: ours works out to about $1.42 an ounce before shipping.
The freshness argument, with numbers
Freshness is the strongest reason to subscribe. Wikipedia's article on coffee roasting says roasted whole beans stay fresh for up to about a month kept cool, gives roasted coffee an optimal shelf life of about two weeks, and says ground coffee is best used right away. A bag that sits on a store shelf spends part of that window before you open it.
A subscription on the right schedule buys each bag close to its roast date and in the amount you will drink before it fades. Our first promise covers the roasting side: roasted and shipped within 3 days. If you drink a bag in two weeks, the two-week plan keeps you inside the freshest window. If a bag lasts you six weeks, no plan fixes that; buy smaller, or skip boxes.

Who a coffee subscription suits, and who should skip it
It suits you if
- You brew at home most days and run out of beans at the worst moment.
- You get bored of one bag and want the next to be different.
- Two people in the house drink different roasts. With two bags a box, the second bag can have its own roast and style.
- You want to buy local but live far from the roasters, say in the mountains or out of state.
Skip it if
- You drink one coffee and never tire of it. Buy it from that roaster.
- You drink under a bag a month. The beans will pass their best before you finish.
- You need large volumes. Some roasters sell bigger bags: Novo sells sizes up to 5 lb and Camp 4 sells 1 lb bags ground to order.
- Buying at the cafe counter is part of your routine. That spending supports the same roasters.
How to find out without committing
Take the free first bag and see. You pay the $7.99 shipping on that box, then skip, pause or cancel online if it is not for you. Four promises apply to every box:
- Roasted and shipped within 3 days.
- Free replacement if a bag disappoints.
- A reminder email 3 days before each box.
- Your ratings steer the next bag.
The reminder email is the part that keeps a subscription honest: you see each box coming and can skip it if the last bag is still half full. Is a coffee subscription cheaper than buying bags?
Not by design. Our price, $16.99 for 12 oz, about $1.42 an ounce before shipping, is set for specialty coffee roasted to order. Compare it per ounce with the bag you buy now, and add shipping to ours.
Can I pause instead of canceling?
Yes. You can skip a box, pause, or cancel online, and the reminder email 3 days before each box gives you time to decide.
Is a coffee subscription a good gift?
For a coffee drinker, yes, because it keeps arriving after the day itself. Our gift is paid once for 3, 6 or 12 boxes, shipping included, and does not renew.
