Ampersand Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Colorado: an independent roaster based in Boulder, founded in 2015. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Kurt Hans left a job at a private equity firm in 2015 to start Ampersand Coffee in Boulder's Gunbarrel area, beginning with a roasting space and tasting room. His interest began years earlier with a simple question about where his coffee actually came from, which led him to research how coffee is grown and how poorly many growers are paid. Ampersand launched as a 100 percent Fair Trade and organic roaster, rather than offering one certified line alongside conventional coffee.
The company focuses on two causes it sees as the biggest levers at origin, women's empowerment and environmental sustainability, and buys a large share of its coffee through Cafe Femenino, a network supporting women farmers in countries including Peru, Guatemala and Colombia. It is organic certified through CCOF, sells Smithsonian Bird Friendly shade-grown coffees, and says it is pioneering Regenerative Organic Certified coffee through the Regenerative Organic Alliance. In late 2019 Ampersand became a coffee vendor for Patagonia Provisions, which sold its coffee nationally from 2020 to 2023.
Its coffee is sold in Colorado grocers including Natural Grocers, Safeway, Whole Foods in the Rocky Mountain region, Lucky's Market and Marczyk Fine Foods.

Roast levels run medium and dark. House blends include Ampersand Espresso (organic) and Roaster's Recommendation (roastmaster's pick). Single origins on the list when we checked: Brazil Minas Gerais (Regenerative Organic Certified), Colombia (Regenerative Organic Certified, its darkest coffee), Peru Cecanor, medium and dark (Regenerative Organic and Bird Friendly), Nicaragua (Regenerative Organic Certified), Honduras Marcala, medium and dark (organic, Bird Friendly), Guatemala, medium and dark (organic), Mexico Chiapas (organic), Congo (organic) and Bolivia (organic).
